Zombieland

Zombieland came out this past Friday and it was #1 in the box office! Woo Hoo! In a time when movie studios are actually loosing money on films, i.e. the cost to make a film is more than they recoup with box office sales, it always makes me happy when a film like Zombieland does this in ONE WEEKEND! Maybe it is because people weren't expecting much from ANOTHER zombie film but then when people saw it at one of our 6 local advance screenings, they told all their friends about it and, BOOM, box office magic. I like to think so at least :).

We were lucky enough to have some of our local zombie at a few of our screenigs. Check out the pics below and join them on their Zombie Walk on the 10th of October in Seattle.

A SERIOUS MAN - Wednesday, October 7

A Serious Man is the story of an ordinary man’s search for clarity in a universe where Jefferson Airplane is on the radio and “F-Troop” is on TV. It is 1967 and Larry Gopnik (Stuhlbarg), a physics professor at a quiet Midwestern university, has just been informed by his wife Judith (Sari Lennick) that she is leaving him. Larry’s unemployable brother Arthur (Kind) is sleeping on the couch, his son Danny (Wolff) is a discipline problem and his daughter Sarah (McManus) is filching money from his wallet in order to save up for a nose job. All-the-while an anonymous hostile letter-writer is trying to sabotage Larry’s chances for tenure at the university, and a graduate student seems to be trying to bribe him for a passing grade while threatening to sue him for defamation. Can anyone help him cope with his afflictions and become a righteous person – a mensch – a serious man?

A Serious Man is directed by Joel and Ethan Coen and stars Michael Stuhlbarg, Richard Kind, Aaron Wolff, Sari Lennick, Jessica McManus and Adam Arkin.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs...Feeding America for a Chance to end Hunger

I can't believe that September is almost here and fall is just around the corner! Fall is my favorite season because not only is it my birthday season but it is also the season of my second favorite holiday, Halloween AND it is a time when this pale redhead can stop worrying about getting sunburned cozy up to a cup of cider and a comfy sweater.

Fall is also the time when food drives start kicking into gear in anticipation of the holiday season and in these lean times, it is especially important that if we can give...anything, we do so. This is why it is so cool that Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, from Columbia Pictures is teaming up with Feeding America for its September 18th release. Not only should you go see the movie but you should also visit your local food bank and make a donation.

Happy Solstice!

This Saturday, I celebrated the Solstice at the Fremont Solstice Parade. Naked Bicyclists, crazy floats...PARTY! We passed out (500) DAYS OF SUMMER beach balls and screening passes but my dream of getting a naked bicyclist to pose with it was not realized...I mean, beach balls, naked people...the possibilities are endless.

It was a perfect event for this movie which is a fun rollercoaster of emotions and great music, just like summer should be.

Paper Heart

Falling in love is magical, exciting and painful, but is it real?? With over 50% of marriages supposedly ending in divorce and the controversy surrounding gay marriage, love, or at least the official/public expression of it can loose meaning. Enter Charlyne Yi and a cute little mockumentary that will be showing this weekend at SIFF, called Paper Heart. The premise is that Charlyne Yi, who appeared in Knocked up and 30 Rock, does not believe in true love so she goes around interviewing everyone from kids on the playground to old married couples. In the course of this endeavor, she meets the ever awkward, always lovable Michael Cera and begins to change her conception of the whole love thing. Go see it! Paper Heart might just change your conception too!

STATE OF PLAY In Theaters Tomorrow!

Today a colleague asked me what the circulation would be for an article that runs online on the website of a print publication. I suppose it would have something to do with the number of hits that the website gets and not the circulation of the print edition. What if the piece ran in both the print edition and online? Would it be even more? Do people, particularly young people even CARE about the print edition when they can get any news they desire on their iPhones or Crackberries in mere moments without all that messy newsprint? To all those fastidious Gen Y, X and Z'ers out there, I say this: GO SEE STATE OF PLAY! You may have never owned a subscription to a newspaper, but after seeing this film, you too will mourn it's passing. In these days of quick and dirty, easy information that pops up on Twitter then finds its way to "legitimate" news sites in mere moments before being debunked moments later, this portrayal of a newspaper in search of the truth is truly compelling. Between the eager young blogger played by Rachel McAdams and the seasoned newspaper man played by Russell Crowe, the embattled politician, Ben Affleck and my personal favorite, the sleazy PR person played by Jason Bateman, STATE OF PLAY boasts a cast of characters that not only entertain us but make us think...and that is what we should never stop doing, whether it is about an article in the newspaper or information floating around in cyberspace. When we stop thinking, we are truly PLAYED.
